A Career Built in the Underground
Born Zane Marie Reynosa, Zane One wrote her first rap at 15 and began her career in 1989, learning from her brother Dax and her cousin Jurny Big. Her name started as a tag in graffiti sketchbooks.
In 1993 she became one of the first members of the pioneering collective Tunnel Rats, formed by her brother, and toured extensively across the Western and Southern United States. She went on to record three studio albums and a compilation with the group. Around 2001 she founded Saturday Night Freestyle, an eight-member live band that stayed active for six years.
She was also a fixture of the Los Angeles battle rap scene, appearing in the 2004 documentary The Battle for L.A.: Footsoldiers, Vol. 1. Rapzilla once called her one of the first “raw and elite” women a male-dominated industry respected.
In 2009 she released her debut solo album, L.A. Woman, which explored faith, womanhood, and life as a single mother. Outside of music, she founded Zane Marie Bags, a line of vintage handbags, luggage, wallets, and rhyme books.
With The Morse Code of Cats, she steps back to the front. “The Mamas” arrives November 3.
